CrossFit Open 2026

What It Is and Why You Should Do It

Every year, the CrossFit Open marks a turning point in the season — and for many athletes, a turning point in their training.

From February 26 through March 16, the CrossFit Open brings together hundreds of thousands of athletes around the world for three workouts over three weeks. Whether you’re brand new to CrossFit or a seasoned veteran, the Open is designed for everyone.

So… what is the CrossFit Open?

The Open is the first stage of the CrossFit Games season, but don’t let that intimidate you. At its core, the Open is a worldwide fitness event where athletes complete the same workouts and submit their scores online.

Each workout:

  • Is released weekly
  • Has multiple divisions and scaling options
  • Can be adapted to meet you exactly where you’re at

This means every athlete can participate, regardless of age, experience, or fitness level.

The Open isn’t about being the best

At Iron Cowboy, we view the Open as more than just a competition against others.

We see it as:

  • A test of consistency
  • A chance to lean into discomfort
  • An opportunity to see what happens when you fully commit to the process
  • A great community event to celebrate fitness

It’s not about winning.
It’s about showing up, trying hard, and doing something that pushes you outside your comfort zone.

Why we encourage our members to sign up

1. It gives your training real purpose
For three weeks, every workout has an intention behind it. You’re not just “working out” — you’re preparing, executing, and reflecting. That focus changes everything.

2. It shows you real, measurable progress
Maybe it’s your first pull-up.
Maybe it’s more reps than last year.
Maybe it’s simply feeling confident under pressure.

The Open has a way of revealing progress you didn’t even realize you’d made. Plus, doing it year after year, we get a really great “check-in” with our fitness. Just like repeating a benchmark workout, we want to test, assess, and implement changes to improve for next time.

3. You’re not doing it alone
Our coaches are there every step of the way — helping with:

  • Scaling options
  • Strategy and pacing
  • Judging and standards
  • Encouragement when things get hard

You’ll never be guessing or left on your own.

4. It strengthens the community
There’s something powerful about suffering together in a positive environment. The Open brings extra energy, camaraderie, and connection into the gym — and that carries over long after the final workout. Every year when we make an effort to make the Open fun, it adds big time vibez.

You don’t need to be “ready” or whatever other excuse you have.

This is the biggest misconception we hear.

You don’t need:

  • A certain lift
  • A certain skill
  • A certain fitness level

You just need the willingness to show up and try.

The Open meets you where you are — and challenges you to take one step forward.
